Yew Lane.
The village scene in Ecclesfield shown here was captured when every village street was a much quieter place than today. The only clues that traffic ever passes along the lane are the horse droppings. In her story The Yew Lane Ghosts, published in 1865, Juliana Ewing, the Ecclesfield-born children’s writer, described it as ‘cool and dark when the hottest sunshine lay beyond it – a loitering place for lovers – dearly-loved play-space of generations of children on sultry summer days’.
