Pack Horse Inn, Mortomley, 1977.
Most transport before the eighteenth century, even for carrying heavy goods, was by pack-horse. And one of the heaviest used routes was over the Pennines from the saltfields of Cheshire into South Yorkshire. En route horses had to be rested and grazed. And it was not only the horses that needed food, drink and rest. Carriers would put up at wayside inns. Hence the existence at Mortomley down Packhorse Lane of the Packhorse Inn.
